BIOMATERIALS COME FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES

One of the main characteristics of bioplastics is that they come from renewable resources while conventional plastic is produced from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource. Those that can be restored at a rate greater than their extraction, processing and use are considered renewable. Oil takes millions of years to generate, while the plants and microorganisms used for bioplastics take months to regenerate.

  2. If we can create bioplastics that come from renewable resources, do you think conventional plastic created from non-renewable sources like oil will disappear? Why hasn't the change been made already? (Laura)
